Cleveland Park residents celebrate the official opening of the Cleveland Park Promenade, a vibrant new public space created from a former service lane.

Problem: The service lane along Connecticut Avenue in Cleveland Park, NW, posed safety hazards for pedestrians and offered limited and inefficient parking.

Solution: The D.C. Department of Transportation, in collaboration with the community, transformed the service lane into a pedestrian-friendly promenade. This involved:

  • Closing the lane to vehicle traffic.
  • Creating a level surface for seamless pedestrian flow.
  • Adding landscaping, seating, and space for events like farmers markets and art pop-ups.

Benefits:

  • Improved safety for pedestrians.
  • Enhanced community space for residents to gather, dine, and enjoy outdoor activities.
  • More vibrant and attractive streetscape.

Addressing Parking Concerns:

  • While some parking spaces were removed, the community emphasizes alternative options:
    • Sam's Park & Shop parking lot
    • Target free parking for one hour with purchase
    • Embracing walkable and car-alternative living

Grand Opening: The community invites everyone to celebrate the Cleveland Park Promenade's grand opening on April 6th.
