DC Steakhouse STK Reboots with "Vibe Dining" After Sexist Debut

Gone are the stilettos and skimpy skirts - STK returns to DC with a new focus

STK, a steakhouse chain known for its modern atmosphere, is back in Washington D.C. after a two-year absence. Their first attempt in 2014 aimed for a "female-friendly" vibe that fell flat, relying on sexist cliches. This relaunch ditches the outdated marketing and embraces a trendier concept: "Vibe Dining."

From Sizzle to Fizzle: The First STK DC

The original STK garnered attention for its off-putting approach. Promotional images featured stilettos spearing raw meat, and scantily clad models populated the opening. Cocktails like "French Kiss" and "Pink Elegance" leaned on tired stereotypes. Comments from management solidified the misguided strategy, suggesting the restaurant catered to women seeking male attention. Unsurprisingly, it closed its doors after a short run.

Second Chances and Vibe Dining

STK returns in a new location, occupying the former space of celebrity chef Mike Isabella's restaurant. Gone are the sexist gimmicks, replaced by a focus on "Vibe Dining," a concept not always well-defined. Ideally, it creates a fun atmosphere through a combination of music, lighting, and clientele. Unfortunately, STK leans heavily on clichés. The music drowns out conversation, and the dim lighting makes it hard to see your companions. As one reviewer put it, "Loud, aesthetically pleasing, and just good enough."

A Vibe with a Flaw?

One element missing from the vibe? Convenient restrooms. The restaurant inexplica lacks dedicated facilities. Venturing to the restroom requires navigating crowded bars and hallways, asking for directions multiple times before reaching the solitary women's stalls within the larger Marriott Marquis lobby.

STK: 901 Massachusetts Ave., NW.
