Tucked away in Sara’s Market, a charming gourmet bodega in Georgetown, is a hidden gem known as Monstera Burrito.
This pop-up, created by Chef Alex McCoy, the mastermind behind some of DC’s most beloved burgers at Lucky Buns, offers a unique breakfast burrito experience that has quickly gained a loyal following.
San Diego-Style Burritos with a Local Twist
What makes Monstera Burrito special? Their massive burritos are inspired by the San Diego style, which means they come packed with crispy French fries for an added layer of texture and flavor.
But McCoy doesn't stop there. The menu features three mouthwatering options:
- Classic: For those who prefer the familiar, there's a classic version with sausage or bacon.
- Barbacoa: Craving something more adventurous? The Oaxacan-style barbacoa is a must-try. Made with halal beef wrapped in avocado leaves and braised for eight hours, it's a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
- Cumin-Roasted Eggplant: Don't be fooled by the vegetarian option – the cumin-roasted eggplant is a sleeper hit. Marinated in a special "Mexican-style harissa" and roasted with fresh and dry spices, it's a flavor explosion in every bite.
All burritos are served with a side of addictive avocado salsa verde, the perfect condiment to tie everything together.
Born from a Love for Local Community
Monstera Burrito wasn't always a planned venture. Chef McCoy, a longtime resident of Georgetown, became a regular at Sara's Market after it was revitalized with local foods, beers, and wines in 2023. The owners, Vivien Tsang and John Michael Kushner (with extensive experience in catering and restaurants), along with their partner Tosca Metz, envisioned Sara's Market as a place that fostered a sense of community.
Seeing the underutilized sandwich counter, McCoy – who already served breakfast burritos on the brunch menu at Lucky Buns – offered to take the helm. The name Monstera comes from the large Monstera plant that marks the pop-up's location within the store – there's no fancy signage, just pure, delicious food.
The Future of Monstera Burrito
Monstera Burrito has become a weekend sensation, routinely selling out within two hours. While they'll be open this weekend (April 20th and 21st), it's always best to check their Instagram for the latest updates on hours and future pop-up dates.
The good news for fans is that Chef McCoy is actively looking for a permanent home for Monstera Burrito. Ideally, he envisions a small, funky space in a residential neighborhood that captures the same friendly vibe as Sara's Market.
"We want a place where people can get a good coffee, grab a burrito, chat with friends, and relax," says McCoy. "It's about good food and good company – that's the essence of Monstera Burrito."
So, if you're looking for a unique and satisfying breakfast experience, be sure to check out Monstera Burrito. You might just discover your new favorite weekend ritual.
