Looking for a place to unwind, indulge in some delicious treats, and connect with your community? Look no further than The Family Room in Laytonsville, Maryland. This charming spot, run by a dedicated mother-daughter team, offers a unique blend of coffee, ice cream, local Maryland-made goods, and a welcoming atmosphere that fosters a sense of community.

More Than Just Coffee and Ice Cream

The Family Room boasts a curated selection of Maryland-made gifts and products, showcasing the talents of local artisans. This dedication to supporting the community extends beyond just stocking local goods. "We work with Maryland makers, and we offer a place for people to come and shop local," says owner Kim Glab. "People really love to support local businesses right now, and coming here knowing that it’s going back into the local economy makes us a little bit more unique."

Sweet Treats and Summer Fun

But let's not forget the delicious offerings! Homemade ice cream is a major draw, with a rotating flavor of the month and a seasonal drink menu to keep things exciting. For owner Corinne Sawyer, the chance to create and serve these treats is a highlight. "We have a flavor of the month that rotates every month," Sawyer said. "We also have a seasonal drink menu that we do."

A Mother-Daughter Dream Team

The Family Room is a true family affair, run by Kim Glab and her daughter, Corinne Sawyer. They find joy and challenge in working together. "It's a dream come true" to operate as a mother-daughter duo, Glab says. "It's not without its challenges because we're both very opinionated, but we have a lot of fun together," she laughs. Sawyer echoes the sentiment, adding, "I do not take for granted the fact that we get to spend every day working together."

A Community Hub

The Family Room goes beyond just being a store; it's a vibrant community hub. Throughout the summer, they host a variety of events, with their "cars and cones" gathering being a particular favorite. Every Friday night, the parking lot transforms into a classic car showcase, attracting families and car enthusiasts alike. "We have classic cars in the parking lot," Sawyer explains. "We have a huge crowd of families and classic car owners that come and hang out." They also host a monthly pop-up market from May to November, featuring a wide range of Maryland businesses, offering everything from handcrafted candles and jewelry to delicious local food.

A Place to Relax and Feel at Home

Ultimately, The Family Room is about creating a space where people can feel comfortable and connected. "We want people to walk into The Family Room and be able to take the burdens of life and put them down and feel just a little bit happier," says Sawyer. Whether you're stopping by for a scoop of ice cream, browsing local crafts, or simply soaking up the community atmosphere, The Family Room offers a warm welcome and a taste of Laytonsville charm.
