D.C. Dominates the James Beard Awards: Rafidi and Morishita Take Top Honors

The James Beard Awards, the culinary world's most prestigious honors (often called the "Oscars of Food" by the legendary Ruth Reichl), were held in Chicago on June 10th, 2024. And what a night it was for the D.C. food scene!

Local Chefs Shine Bright

The evening kicked off with a bang for D.C. with rising star Masako Morishita winning the coveted Emerging Chef award. Morishita, a former Commanders cheerleader who took the helm at the historic Perry's restaurant in Adams Morgan, has won hearts (and stomachs) with her unique take on Japanese comfort food. Her win is a testament to the power of hard work and following your dreams, as she passionately declared: "This is my wildest American dream come true!"

D.C.'s Albi Takes Center Stage

The night's biggest surprise came at the very end. Last year's Outstanding Chef winner, Rob Rubba of Oyster Oyster, announced Michael Rafidi of Albi in the Navy Yard as his successor. Rafidi, known for his innovative Levantine cuisine, dedicated the award to his Palestinian heritage, stating: "The only thing I can think about right now is my Palestinian grandparents and my mother. This award is dedicated to Palestine."

A Night of National Recognition

While Rafidi and Morishita stole the show, other D.C. chefs received well-deserved recognition. Moon Rabbit's Kevin Tien and Inferno Pizzeria Napoletana's Tony Conte were both nominated for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic, with the award ultimately going to Harley Peet of Bas Rouge in Easton, Maryland. Moon Rabbit's talented pastry chef, Susan Bae, was also nominated for Outstanding Pastry Chef, although the award went to Atsuko Fujimoto of Portland, Maine.

While some local favorites like Tail Up Goat (Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program) and Hollis Wells Silverman (Outstanding Restaurateur) didn't take home the awards this year, their nominations showcase the depth of culinary talent in the nation's capital.

D.C. Cuisine: A National Powerhouse

The 2024 James Beard Awards solidify D.C.'s position as a national culinary powerhouse. From innovative takes on comfort food to Levantine delights, D.C. chefs are pushing boundaries and creating unforgettable dining experiences. Whether you're a local or a visitor, be sure to explore the vibrant D.C. food scene and discover your own favorite chef or restaurant!
