A Beloved Legacy Ends
Crisfield Seafood, a Silver Spring institution for nearly eight decades, is set to close its doors on December 22nd. The Landis family, who has owned the restaurant for three generations, made the difficult decision to shutter the beloved eatery.A Taste of the Past
Crisfield Seafood was more than just a restaurant; it was a time capsule, transporting diners back to a bygone era of seafood dining. The restaurant's signature dishes, including softshell crab sandwiches, Norfolk-style seafood, and baked stuffed shrimp, were culinary treasures that had been passed down through generations. The restaurant's charming interior, with its pale blue cinderblock walls, horseshoe-shaped wood counter, and tchotchke-lined shelves, added to its nostalgic appeal. It was a place where time seemed to stand still, offering a respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
A Family Affair
The Landis family has been at the heart of Crisfield Seafood since its inception in 1945. John Landis, who co-owns the restaurant with several of his siblings and cousins, shared the bittersweet news of the closure. He explained that the fourth generation of the family had other aspirations and were less interested in continuing the family business. While the decision to close was not easy, the Landises had been contemplating it for some time. The final push came this year when they were required to commit to a year-long lease, a decision that ultimately proved too challenging.
A Farewell to a Silver Spring Icon
As Silver Spring has evolved into a bustling urban center, many of Crisfield Seafood's contemporaries have closed their doors. However, Crisfield persevered, serving as a living museum of classic DC-area seafood dining. The Landis family, who grew up working at the restaurant, treated it as an extension of their home. John Landis fondly recalled starting work at the tender age of seven or eight.
In a surprising turn of events, Crisfield Seafood was included on the New York Times' list of the 25 Best Restaurants in Washington, DC, in April. While this recognition was a significant honor, it did not change the family's decision to close.
As Crisfield Seafood prepares to bid farewell, it leaves behind a legacy of delicious food, warm hospitality, and cherished memories. The restaurant will be deeply missed by its loyal patrons and the Silver Spring community.
